The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is a bill designed to prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the trade and transport of horseflesh and live horses intended for human consumption. On June 8, 2005, the U.S. House passed an amendment to the House Agriculture Appropriations bill that defunded the U.S. Department of Agriculture's horse slaughter-related activities. The U.S. Senate approved an identical amendment on September 20. Together, these amendments (which were approved by Congresss as part of the 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill) were intended to stop horse slaughter during 2006. The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is needed to ensure a permanent ban on slaughter is enacted. Please contact your Congress person and encourage them to pass this bill.
